Wise Metals Group Buys Albuquerque-Denver Recycling Operations Will Provide Added Environmentally Friendly Source of Aluminum for Manufacture of Aluminum Sheet BALTIMORE, Md. – January 14, 2002 – Wise Metals Group has added to its "mining operations" by purchasing two aluminum recycling sites, one in Albuquerque, NM, and the other in Denver, Colo., that will provide its aluminum sheet manufacturing division with an added source of metal. Wise acquired the two recycling operations from Tomra North America, which is known for its manufacture of reverse vending machines that accept used aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles for recycling. Wise Recycling will retain the nearly 50 employees at the Albuquerque and Denver sites. "We’re very excited about this purchase because it allows us to continue Wise’s philosophy of building our infrastructure that supplies our alloys unit with scrap," said Danny Mendelson, president of Wise Recycling. Wise Recycling, based in Baltimore, is the division of Wise Metals that supplies Wise Alloys in Muscle Shoals, Ala., with scrap aluminum. The scrap, primarily from recycled aluminum cans, is then melted down and reused in the manufacture of aluminum sheet for the beverage and food-container industries. The Albuquerque operations include four recycling service centers where the scrap aluminum is sorted, processed and shipped, plus 10 "convenience centers" in shopping centers where used beverage cans are collected for recycling. The Denver operations include four service centers. Wise Metals Group LLC is the parent company of Wise Alloys and Wise Recycling. Based in Muscle Shoals, Ala., Wise Alloys is the third leading U.S. producer of aluminum can stock for the beverage and food industries. It is an environmentally friendly company that relies heavily on recycled aluminum in the production of its can stock. Wise Recycling is one of the largest, direct-from-the-public collectors of aluminum beverage containers in the United States, operating shipping and processing locations east of the Mississippi River that support a network of neighborhood collection centers. |
